Steam cleaning is one of those lab processes that's easy to underestimate until you see the difference it makes. For dental lab restorations — zirconia crowns, metal frameworks, ceramic layering cases — contamination at key stages (before bonding, before ceramic application, before glazing) directly affects adhesion and final quality. Why Steam Cleaning Matters in Lab Workflow

Dental lab processing introduces contamination at multiple stages:

  • Oils from handling (fingerprints on ceramic, on ceramic-facing surfaces of metal)
  • Die spacer residue on internal crown surfaces
  • Scanning spray residue before bonding or ceramic application
  • Coolant residue from wet milling on framework surfaces
  • Investment residue on cast metal frameworks

  • Before ceramic layering: Steam clean the coping/substructure before applying opaque or body ceramic. Contamination is a primary cause of ceramic delamination.
  • After sandblasting: Steam clean to remove aluminum oxide particles from the surface before bonding procedures.
  • Before final glazing/polishing of zirconia: Clean surface residue before the final aesthetic step.

Water Quality

Use distilled or deionized water in the steamer. Tap water contains minerals that deposit on the heating element and steam nozzle, reducing performance over time and shortening the element's life. Renfert recommends distilled water for the POWER steamer — this is not optional advice.
